Phones without SD cards

When I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S7 everything on the phone would be erased and nothing on the SD card would be touched.
Most of the new phones don’t have SD cards they have something like 8G ram and 128G storage some have more.
My question is does the storage on these new phones get erased when preparing them for custom roms and rooting and every time you change roms does this happen ?

Yes if you have to format or factory rest. I would put the files on a SD card and use a card reader with a type c adapter or a type c flash drive and use the otg function in twrp to flash from that works just as well👍

Ok thanks Greg. I prefer the SD cards don’t know why they got rid of them .
