Here I’ll explain how to install TWRP and root the OnePlus 6 and 6T after it’s updated to Android 10 OOS 10.3.0, OB4 and above. I’m going to assume if you’re proceeding to root the device then you know how to use ADB and it’s basic commands. If not take a look at my tutorial here: ADB and Fastboot 101
Your bootloader must be unlocked
You will need these three files:
- TWRP .img file - https://sourceforge.net/projects/mauronofrio-twrp/files/Enchilada/twrp-3.3.1-18-enchilada-Q-mauronofrio.img/download
- TWRP installer zip - https://sourceforge.net/projects/mauronofrio-twrp/files/Enchilada/twrp-3.3.1-18-enchilada-installer-mauronofrio.zip/download
- The latest version of Magisk zip - https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases
I used Magisk v21.0 to root my OnePlus 6.
Step 1. Place the downloaded TWRP .img file in the ADB and Fastboot folder on your computer.
Step 2. Place the downloaded TWRP zip and Magisk zip on your phone.
Step 3. Put your phone into Fastboot mode and connect it to your computer.
Step 4. Boot TWRP by using this command: fastboot boot twrp-3.3.1-18-enchilada-Q-mauronofrio.img
Step 5. Once TWRP boots flash the TWRP installer zip you placed on your phone.
Step 6. After successfully flashing, reboot the recovery from within TWRP (from the main TWRP menu/Reboot/Recovery)
Step 7. Now flash the Magisk zip that you placed on your phone. After successfully flashing, reboot your phone and Profit… you are now rooted with TWRP recovery installed.
After rebooting, I recommend turning on “Advanced reboot” in Developer options so you’ll be able to easily reboot to TWRP without using ADB or the button combo to enter recovery.
